Google Maps is inaccurate by design in China — coordinates are offset by up to 500 metres. Amap uses the correct Chinese coordinate system, has an English mode, subway exit numbers and public transit directions. Switch to English in settings before you leave home, and download offline maps for rural areas.

China runs on a different digital toolkit
Google, WhatsApp, Uber and your contactless card stop working the moment you cross the border. Everything from paying for a bowl of noodles to booking a train runs through a handful of Chinese apps. This page is the setup checklist we send to every traveller before they fly — payments, app replacements, VPN, and what to pack for altitude.

Your pre-flight setup checklist
Work through these before you board. The first three groups can only be completed reliably on your home internet connection — inside China, app stores change and VPN downloads are blocked.
A note on timing: install and verify everything at least 72 hours before departure. Bank verification SMS can fail on foreign numbers at the last minute, and app store region changes can take a day to settle.
The Replacement Map
What replaces what
You are not “losing” apps in China — you are swapping them for local equivalents that do the same job, often better, inside the Chinese internet. Install the replacements before you fly.
DiDi has an English interface, lets you type destinations in English, and pays through Alipay or WeChat Pay. No cash changes hands. It is cheaper than hotel taxis in most cities and works in tier-1 and most tier-2 cities. Download the international version from your home app store.
Avoid the OTA hassle. While the official 12306 English app exists for simple train tickets, and WeChat/Alipay mini-programs can book domestic flights, navigating them as a foreigner can be time-consuming. As your licensed local agency, we handle your train, flight, and hotel bookings directly. This ensures Tibet-permit-aligned timing, saves you hours of translation, and comes with zero OTA markups.
Baidu Translate’s camera mode solves Chinese-only menus and signs instantly. It is the most practical offline translation tool for China. Pleco is a strong backup for individual words and characters. Neither requires a VPN for basic use.
WeChat works normally in China and is how you will communicate with your guide, hotel staff and anyone you meet. Tell family at home to install it before you fly, and use it as your primary contact channel. WeChat Pay is built into the same app.
Alipay is the closest thing to a universal payment system in China — accepted from luxury hotels down to street food carts. It also runs mini-apps for ride-hailing, restaurant reviews and metro transit. Link your foreign card directly; no Chinese bank account is needed.
How Payment Actually Works
The ¥200 line, and what it means for your budget
Both Alipay and WeChat Pay charge a platform fee on foreign cards, but the structure is simple and predictable: small payments are free, larger payments carry a 3% surcharge. Understanding this changes how you split bills — and how much cash to carry.
Platform fee on foreign cards, 2026
The threshold is per transaction, not per day. A ¥180 meal is free; a ¥220 meal costs you about ¥6.60 in platform fee, plus whatever your home bank charges for the foreign transaction.
No platform fee. Street food, metro rides, small groceries, temple donations.
About ¥6 on a ¥200 bill, ¥15 on a ¥500 bill. Hotels, train tickets, larger meals.
Local tip from Lhasa: if a mobile payment fails, try disconnecting your VPN and paying again. Alipay and WeChat Pay sometimes flag the mismatch between a foreign VPN server location and your local GPS coordinates. This is one of the most common “why won’t it work” moments for first-time visitors — and one of the easiest to fix.
Data, VPN and the Firewall
An eSIM gives you data — not access
This is the single most misunderstood point in China travel setup. No eSIM bypasses the Great Firewall. You need both: a data plan and a tested VPN. In Tibet, you also need offline maps for the moments when neither has signal.
Standard China eSIM
Connects to China Mobile or China Unicom. Fast 4G/5G in cities, weaker in remote Tibet. The firewall applies normally.
Data: yesGoogle, WhatsApp, Instagram
Blocked on a standard eSIM unless you also run a working VPN. No eSIM changes this on its own.
Access: no, without VPNYour tested VPN
Install two different VPNs before you fly. Some providers stop working during sensitive periods; having a backup is not paranoia, it is practical.
Reliability: variable — test bothTibet-specific: coverage is good along main highways and in Lhasa, Shigatse and Nyingchi, but drops in remote valleys and on high passes. Download offline maps in Amap before leaving Lhasa, and carry a power bank — cold at altitude drains phone batteries much faster than you expect. If your VPN fails, your Chinese apps still work; you are not offline, just limited to domestic services.
What to Pack for Tibet
Layers, not a single jacket
Tibet can swing from T-shirt weather at midday to near-freezing before dawn, and the sun at 3,650 m is intense enough to burn through cloud. The packing logic is layers you can add and remove, plus protection for sun, cold and dryness — not one heavy coat.
Monastery dress code: cover your shoulders and knees. Shorts, vests and short skirts are not appropriate inside active monasteries. Some chapels are closed to women — look for signage. Remove hats and sunglasses inside temple halls, and walk clockwise around monasteries, stupas and the Barkhor kora. Photography inside chapels is often restricted; your guide will tell you where the line is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Setup questions we answer every week
The practical points travellers raise most often before their first China–Tibet trip.
Do I really need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?
Yes, install both. Some vendors accept only one or the other, and the two apps serve different primary purposes: Alipay is slightly broader for payments and mini-programs, while WeChat is how you will communicate with guides, hotels and anyone you meet.
Both accept foreign Visa and Mastercard directly, with no Chinese bank account needed. Set up both before you fly, and test each with a small purchase — a ¥5 bottle of water is a perfect test.
Does a China eSIM bypass the Great Firewall?
No. No eSIM bypasses the firewall. A standard China eSIM connects to China Mobile or China Unicom infrastructure and the firewall applies normally. You still need a separately installed VPN for Google, WhatsApp and Instagram.
A small number of “unfiltered access” eSIMs route through third-country servers, but their reliability is variable and they can stop working without notice. The safest approach is a standard eSIM plus a tested VPN — and a backup VPN.
How much cash should I carry in Tibet?
We recommend carrying around ¥2,000 in small bills (¥10, ¥20, ¥50, ¥100). While Lhasa and Shigatse are heavily digitised, cash is essential for tipping guides and drivers (customary but voluntary), butter-lamp donations at monasteries, and remote vendors who lack reliable mobile signal.
Once you head west to Everest Base Camp, Namtso or the Kailash region, mobile signal fluctuates and some vendors only take cash. Withdraw or exchange sufficient cash in Lhasa before departing on any overland journey.
What should I wear inside Tibetan monasteries?
Cover your shoulders and knees. Shorts, vests and short skirts are not appropriate inside active monasteries. Some chapels are closed to women; look for signage. Remove hats and sunglasses inside temple halls.
Walk clockwise around monasteries, stupas and the Barkhor kora. Photography is often restricted inside chapels — your guide will advise.
Why does altitude make my electronics behave differently?
Cold temperatures at high altitude drain lithium batteries faster, and dry air increases static. Keep spare batteries or a power bank in an inside pocket close to your body, not in an outside backpack.
The dry air also makes your skin, lips and eyes dry out quickly — pack lip balm, hand cream and eye drops, and drink more water than you think you need.
Can I use Google Maps in Tibet?
Google Maps is blocked in mainland China and its coordinates inside China are deliberately offset by up to 500 metres, so even when it loads through a VPN it is inaccurate. Use Amap (Gaode Maps) instead.
Amap has an English mode, accurate Chinese coordinates, subway exit numbers and public transit directions. Download offline maps for rural areas before you leave Lhasa.
Before You Fly
If you are unsure whether your setup is complete, ask us
A two-minute email exchange is usually enough to catch the things that trip people up — a bank card that will not verify, a VPN that will not connect, a map that will not load. We would rather answer those questions now than have you discover them at Lhasa airport.
